Obtain a Category A motorboat licence for inland waters on Lake Zurich
Would you like to do more than just admire Lake Zurich from the shore – would you prefer to be at the helm of a motorboat yourself? Then you’ve come to the right place. My name is Frédéric, and at my boating school, AQUA SKILLS Zurich, I’ll prepare you thoroughly for the official Category A boatmaster’s licence exam.
With an A licence, you are permitted to operate motorboats with more than 8 hp (6 kW) on all Swiss lakes and border waters. The test consists of a theory and a practical component. You will learn the practical skills step by step at my boating school – professionally, enthusiastically and in a fun way.
Personal assessment – At the start of every driving lesson, we hold a brief briefing. Together, we discuss your current skills and decide which manoeuvres to focus on today.
Manoeuvring practice – In every lesson, you’ll learn specific manoeuvres relevant to the test, such as correct mooring, anchoring, knot-tying and navigation. You’ll receive practical guidance and honest feedback until you’ve mastered all the manoeuvres required for the test.
Reflection and planning – After every driving lesson, we review your progress together and set the learning objectives and topics for the next lesson.
All you need to know about the theory
Theory first: the smart way to start – We recommend that you take the theory test before beginning your practical training. That way, you’ll already be familiar with all the key manoeuvres, traffic rules and knots by the time you take to the water. However, it is also possible to start the practical training without having passed the theory test.
ELearn efficiently with the Boatdriver-Lernkit – To prepare for the approximately 400 possible exam questions, we recommend using the Boatdriver-Lernkit. It includes: a textbook covering all relevant topics, an app for flexible learning, online courses to help you consolidate your knowledge, and a knot-tying set for practice.
Passing the theory test – The test consists of a multiple-choice questionnaire with 60 questions, of which you must answer at least 76% correctly. With the right study materials and a bit of practice, you’ll pass with ease.
The training area on Lake Zurich covers the stretch from Zurich-Wollishofen and Tiefenbrunnen to Oberrieden and Feldmeilen. We are happy to pick you up at a harbor near you.

The costs for obtaining a boat license in Zurich consist of fees for the boat driving school as well as the navigation authority. In addition to the cost of the driving lessons, there are also expenses for insurance and examination fees.

Hervorragende Bootsfahrschule – klare Empfehlung! Mein Fahrlehrer Frédéric von Aqua Skills war ein hervorragender Lehrer. Der Kurs ist strukturiert aufgebaut und vom ersten Tag an konsequent auf das Ziel ausgerichtet: die Bootsprüfung sicher zu bestehen und das Boot souverän zu manövrieren. Frédéric ist geduldig, gibt gleichzeitig aber konkrete und direkte Anweisungen. Das sorgt für eine steile Lernkurve und gibt schnell Sicherheit am Steuer. Dazu kommen eine schnelle und flexible Terminfindung, faire Preise und sinnvolle Schulungsunterlagen ohne unnötigen Schnickschnack. Wer gut auf die Prüfung vorbereitet sein und gleichzeitig lernen möchte, ein Boot sicher als Kapitän zu führen, ist bei Aqua Skills und Frédéric genau richtig. Where do I register to obtain a boat licence in Zurich?
It is best to contact me first. We can then discuss the most suitable approach together. In general, you will only be admitted to the practical exam once you have successfully passed the theory exam. Registration for the theory exam is done through Schifffahrtsamt of the Canton Zurich.
How much does a boat licence in Zurich cost?
Costs vary depending on the canton and the boat driving school. A detailed overview of the costs can be found here.
How do I prepare for the theory exam?
With official learning materials, such as the BoatDriver learning kit, you can prepare optimally for the theory exam.
How many driving lessons do I need?
In my experience, most students require an average of 15 to 18 lessons of 90 minutes each.
Can I take driving lessons before the theory exam?
Yes, but you will only be admitted to the practical exam after successfully passing the theory exam.
In which languages are the lessons and the exam held?
In the lessons, we can speak German or English. The practical exam is conducted in German. The theory exam is available in German, French, Italian and English; the BoatDriver learning app is also available in these languages.
Is driving instruction available at all times?
In principle, yes. However, in the event of storm warnings, icing conditions or visibility below 300 m, lessons and examinations will be cancelled.
Can boat lessons also be booked in winter?
Yes, Aqua Skills is open all year round and the cabin is comfortably heated. Tip: taking lessons in winter is especially worthwhile, as you will already be ready to go on the lake in spring.
